Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the delivery of television content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is in contrast to delivery through traditional terrestrial, satellite, satellite and cable tv formats. Unlike downloaded websites, IPTV offers the capacity to stream the source media continuously. Consequently, a client media player can begin enjoying the content (for instance, a TV station) almost immediately. This is known as streaming media.

Although IPTV uses the Internet protocol it is not confined to tv streamed from the world wide web, (Internet tv). IPTV is broadly deployed in subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed access stations into end-user assumptions through set-top boxes or other customer-premises equipment. IPTV can be employed for networking delivery around private and corporate networks. IPTV in the telecommunications arena is most famous for its ongoing standardisation procedure (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute).

IPTV services may be classified into three main categories:

1. Live television and live media, with or without related interactivity;

2. Time-shifted media: e.g. catch-up TV (replays a TV show that has been broadcast hours days ago), start-over TV (replays the current TV series from its beginning);

3. Video on demand (VOD): navigate and see items in a stored media catalogue.

The Web protocol-based platform offers significant advantages, including the capacity to incorporate television with other IP-based services such as high speed Internet access and VoIP.

A switched IP network also allows for the delivery of significantly more content and functionality. In a typical TV or satellite system, using broadcast video technologies, all of the content flows downstream to each customer, and the customer switches the content in the set-top box. The client can select from as many options as the telecomms, satellite or cable company can stuff into the « pipe » flowing into the home.

A switched IP system functions differently. Content stays in the network, and only the information that the client chooses is routed to the customer’s home. That frees up bandwidth and the client’s choice is not as limited by the magnitude of this « pipe » to the home. This also implies that the customer’s privacy could be compromised to a greater extent than is possible with conventional TV or satellite programs. It may also offer a way to hack in, or disrupt (see Denial of service) the personal network.
